Happy Anniversary!
I went for my first sketch walk with urban sketchers Singapore about a year ago. It started when I came across an article about a passionate group of urban scape sketchers in Singapore. How interesting! I googled and found their facebook group page. Should I join? I haven't drawn in ages and I was not sure if I could do it on site. I fought an inner battle for days. Finally, I took a deep breath, muttered "what the heck!" and click "request to join". Thankfully it was quickly approved without any question asked. Recalling the instruction to newbies about introducing yourself to the group, I posted my incomplete sketch of Thian Hock Keng, thinking that people would either completely ignored it or boo it off. To my amazement, people actually liked it. Feeling encouraged, I packed my Pigma Micron 0.5 pen, an A5 Daiso sketchpad and four tubes of paint and made my way to the sketchwalk at punggol waterway on 30 Nov 2013.
I knew no one but the group was so friendly that it didn't take long before I started making friends. The sketch walk itself was torturous. The weather was hot and humid. At the end of the two hours I was thirsty and hungry and I cursed myself for not bringing any snacks.
Although i didn't complete my A5 sketch, the feeling of drawing what I see to the sketch pad was immensely satisfying. I can't wait for the next sketch walk!
As people say, the rest was history. I have since upgraded to a 8x16" watercolour sketchpad and you would know how many pens I have from reading my INKtober entries.
Thank you USKsg for enriching my life! I look forward to more sketchwalks!
Morale of the story? Just do it!
