Family portrait

Uncle Yoshida and I have known each other for more than ten years. We took the same train up Alishan in Taiwan when it was still in operation. We exchanged email address and the rest was history. He visited Singapore a few years after to participate in a Japanese food fair and now he is here so often that he could guide me around Orchard road. Alas it wasn't until this April that I had the chance to visit his family in Tokushima.
I thought very hard about what I could get him.

He is very proud of his family so I thought why not a family portrait? He always post pictures of his grandchildren so I got down to digging out old his profile pictures from Facebook. I managed to get one of him, his wife and younger granddaughter in kimono. He has another picture of his granddaughters together.

I would have to combine the two pics in my drawing. I used a Shachihata art line 0.05 pen on Arches cold pressed watercolour paper so that I can achieve more realistic shading. A very light watercolour wash was added at the end. I was rather satisfied with the results although I thought the resemblance could have been better.

I passed it to them and they seemed to like it. Mission accomplished!
