How to sell your art prints online

I have been looking for ways to sell my artwork online. Etsy certainly comes to mind. It has been THE market place for artists and crafters but I am reluctant to use it. First I have no experience in making my own printed goods. Second, shipping is a problem that I don't wish to get into.

That's where Society6 or redbubble come in. They are online platforms for artists to make their artwork available for sale as a variety of products. The best thing is that artists can keep their rights even as they upload their art work online.

You start off registering an account with the website. Next you upload a high resolution scan of your work. Don't worry; it will not be available for download. A low res version is displayed instead. When a customer browse through the uploads and if he like yours, he can choose to have it printed on a variety of products. Society6 or redbubble will print the product and ship it out to the customer.

All you need to do is to upload the art work!

I have tested both sites by printing my own work on a variety of products. Let's look at the actual products:

Redbubble: a small tote bag, iphone 6 tough case and an A2 print.

A2 print

Society6: tote bags in S, M and L sizes, cushion cover

Quality: I received all the goods in good condition. Prints are shipped out in sturdy mailer tubes. The print quality is quite decent. I would suggest making coloured images available on bags and cushion covers. Unfortunately tote bag only comes with black straps.

Speed: They typically shipped out from US and delivery took about 3-4 weeks.

Plus
  • No shipping woes.
  • Print on demand. No cost involved.

Minus
  • You have no control on the quality or material used.
  • Small profit margin.
Good to know
  • Make use of their free shipping. Society6 offered free shipping during the holiday season. I saved at least a quarter of the total cost.
  • Use a good scanner. Parkablogs made a good review on scanners here.
  • Use a decent image editing programme to size and enhance the images. I am using Adobe Lightroom.
Conclusion

I may not have sold anything yet but being able to print my own art work on a tote bag that I carry my art tools around is satisfying enough.
